Some pictures before Boten

This the Town call Boten in Laos the last border town to China.It's 3.00pm on 3th. July I reach the Boten. I cross Laos immigration in Boten and cycle to China Border immigration. Sad to say they don't want to renew my visa. A nice lady and speaks good English at the visa counter advise me to go back to Malaysia and get a new Visa. She also try to help me to see other officers to solve my problem. But Sorry it do not work. I start to think what shall I do now. Ok I made decision to go back to Malaysia and got the visa done. I do not want to disappoint my friends and fans who are following my cycling trip to China.
Immediately I hire a Van from Boten to Houei Xai. I paid RM100 for me and the bicycle, and reach at Houei Xai at 11pm. I stay night in Houei Xai and cross the border to Chiang Khong the Thai border by boat. From Chiang Khong I took a local bus to Chiang Rai, I paid 20Rm for me and the bicycle. I stay a night in Chiang Rai to get the morning bus to Bangkok. Morning I took 6.30am bus to Bangkok and reach at 6.30 am the next day. I paid 50RM for the bike and 68Rm for me. I I took a train to Padang Besar at 3.00pm and reach 9.00am the next day. I paid 89RM for me and bicycle 12RM. I was very tried travelling by bus and train for past two days. I stay in Padang Besar a night and took a bus next day from Kangar to Butterworth. Paid about 15RM. I left my bicycle in Padang Besar Hotel. Now I back home in Nibong Tebal. I have arrange my visa in Penang on Monday the same date I arrive in Butterworth. I will get my fast visa on Wednesday for 15days only. No problem I can renew once I enter China. I paid 200Rm for my new visa. I have no plans yet maybe if I have time I may go to China from Hanoi, Vietam border.

Cycling to Namta to Boten

My last journey out of Laos. I was so eager to see the China Border and the people. I cycle 70km to China Border from Namta. I was also happy to see the sign showing 19km. This old man age is 80 years old, he is making fish traps.Its look like a earth rat. Their best meal.Very few bicycles around here. Two beautiful lady on bike, coming back from work.I have 2km to reach the China Border.

Sometimes I stop in village to rest, I notice there are only children age less than 4 years old and old people in their small houses. Playing all the time with other children. Their parents and sisters go to the hill to work, they come back only when the sun comes down.
The children are so beautiful here and they can say hello!!! only and when I stop they will run a way to their houses.Very seldom you can see this kind of house, most of them are make of bamboos.The shop here sells Laos rice wine. Its cheap and get high fast. The lady is pouring me a pack to try their local wine.Most of time I push the bike, too much hills here. I can only cycle about 60km to 70km a day.

Becoming Monk

This small boys lives in a Buddha Temple for two years before goes to other Temples. They train here in Ta Fa. Two years they will miss their familys. They believe one family members becoming o monk if good for the family.There is a small house beside the temple, this is the place where the sleep.Every morning they go out to collect food in the near by village. It was a rest day, after cycling for 3 days in a roll. The GH owner family is very friendly with me. I had my meals with them for two days.GH owners wife and baby.One of them in Ta Fa took me to catch fish near river.There is only one TV in Ta Fa. Its was a hard day for me. I did not expect hills all my way. I cycle 70km to Ta Fa. There is only one Guesthouse in Ta fa. The people can't understand what I am asking for. I push 5km 2 times in 70km. This was worse than Vietnam hills.Do you know what sheet is this? Luckily I was late, if not I might have meet a wild Elephant on my way to Ta Fa.Some people on way.

Cycling from Phya Rai to Chiang Khong is 70km. Chiang Khong is the end town in Thailand to Laos. I have to take a boat to cross the Mekong river to Houei Xai, Laos.Met a France cycling on the way and cycle with for about 10km. He went of saying I am slow. He cycle about 200km in 8 hours, He is retire from his job and living in Chiang Rai with Thai wife.This man is a kind man, I told him I need to eat there is no shop around to buy food. Wake at 5.30am, had some light breakfast. Cycling to Phaya Mengrai is 53km. It takes me about 4hrs. This road is small road and less traffic.My Bicycle is resting, at lake near Phaya Mengrai.I stop at junction to ask for direction to Chiang Khong. I met a friendly good speaking school teacher, She explain me very clearly. I never seen any Thai women speaking good English like her. The most expensive place I pay in my travel. It's call Bansuwan Resort. I pay 35RM for a night very clear and beautiful bed and toilet. Hope to go the best sleep. Today is my last day in Thailand. I will cycle to Chiang Khong and take a boat to cross the Mekong river to Laos.

Today 26.6.08 is my rest day after cycling for 3 day covering 250km. In the hotel some tourist recommended to visit the white temple and Long neck women, about 20km from Chiang Rai. Very heave rain

It was rainy very heave in the morning in Nakon Sawan, I can't waste my time, I have a few day to reach the Chinese Border. I took a bus to Lampang at 800am and before 3pm. Most of the places you can see Buddha priest in town traveling to temples.The bus had a some break at the Kamphaeng Phet. Its is a nice small town.A good food and good foot massage in Lampang before bed.

He was very soft speaker and very helpful, He explain thing very clearly and he wants people to really understand what he means, and met a few other volunteers in the Camp from India and Sri Lanka.They have beautiful guest house for people who participate in the programs. And a very nice resting place near the river side.I wake a up early and was waiting for someone in the camp to wake up, to say good by before I bike to Chai Nat, I saw a man fishing in the river fishing, say he did not get any fish today.

The train leaves at 6.00pm. I left the Thai Malaysia Hotel at 5.00pm.The people around me are nice to me during my stay in Padang Besar.I was travelling on the train I was told by the train master to get down in Nakhon Pathon railway station. It is nearer to Sing Buri. I cycle 30km to a small town before Sing Buri. There is no sign in English and the people can't speak English too. To ask for a hotel, a ask 6 people. At met a guy speaks little English. I ask him I need a room stay a night. For my surprise he said, You want women, I said no. You can go to Summit Hotel.

14-6-08 - Resting day in Padang Besar
I wake up late and was very tried to take a train to Bangkok. I booked my ticket on 15.6.08. At the same time I can up date my blog. I spend 5 hrs in the Internet Cafe. The train leaves at 6.00pm and reach Bangkok the next day at 11.00am. I will not stay over night in Bangkok will start to bike around 12.00pm the same day.

I went to meet my good friends Ang Boon Teck at Boon Motor at 8.00am. Today is Friday and the shops is close. I miss him. He is a great sportman and had help me in many way. It was raining very heavyly for two hours and I make a stop at a shop near a small town.On the way to Kangar is well develop compare few year ago.

I met two cyclist one from England and France they were cycling from Bangkok.

They were on wheels for more than 3 years.

Wake up at 8.00pm, last night I slept in good friend house from Gurun. He live in Sungai Petani now. He is going to be a grandfather very soon. His name is Genesan.

Way to Alor Star in Guar Chempedak I wanted to meet a very special friend which I didn't see for past 35 years. I can't meet but left my card in the house. Later of the day I got a massage. Thanks for the massage, hope I can meet this special person after my trip to China. The old town looks the same and brings me many old memories during my young days.

Reach Alor at 5.00pm. First I went to look for Mr.Ang Boon Teck but he was not in the office. I wait for him until he come back but no sing of him. Mr. Dash Noh from the Star new paper early made a few calls saying he wants to meet me. What a surprise he was my very old friend during my badminton days that is 1973 to 1978. It was after 1 hour we remember each other. We were talking not realizing we know each other. Feeling not so happy missed some of my good friends in Alor Star and went to bed early.

I plan to take train from Butterworth to Bangkok and a bus to the China border, Because I got visa only 30days only saying I must be in China before the 15.6.08. I was upset and worried I miss my friends all the way to Padang Besar. At 11.00am I was drop at the railway station by my friend Veno. For my surprise today there is no train to Bangkok. I try to arrange a mini bus to Hatyai but they refuse to take my bicycle. I don't want to think much. I fixed my bicycle and start to follow my original plan. About my visa I will apply on my arrival in China border. I hope I will get a new visa on my arrival in China.

Star new paper reporters get some new from me at the railway station. I start to bike at 2.oopm and reach Sungai Petani at 5.pm. Here I my brother and some friends. After a while I went to the bike shop to do some repairs. But my bike give me some problem with can't be repaired. My bike is 6 years old and it's time to have a new one. Don't want to waste time I bought a New bike. The two bike repairers are the best man, they really done a good job to my bike.

HE has neither formal training nor any financial support to promote tourism in Penang.
But David Munusamy Reddie has successfully attracted about 140 foreign tourists to his house in the last five years.

The 56-year-old grandfather, who retired as a Tenaga Nasional Bhd technician on May 2, said many foreign cyclists had frequented his house in Taman Minamah, Nibong Tebal, since he picked up bicycle touring as a hobby in 2003.
“I used to meet fellow bicycle tourists during my trips to several Asian countries. Apart from exchanging stories and experiences, we also invite each other to our respective homes.

“Bicycle touring is not only an exciting way to see a country, it is also a cool way to meet people and to promote your nation and culture,” he said in an interview at his house.
Three years ago, he spent about RM5,000 on an extension to accommodate a guest room, complete with two double beds and an attached bathroom for visiting cyclists.

“I have taken many visiting cyc-lists to local Indian and Malay weddings, some dressed in traditional costumes, besides guiding them on trips to a few traditional villages,” he said.
David, who has diabetes and high cholesterol, said he first took to cycling in 2003 as a physical activity advised by his doctor upon removing three artery blockages.

Soon, he found himself cycling around his Krian district neighbourhood, and later extending it to solo cycling trips to neighbouring countries.

“After vigorously training for five days in Kedah, I went on my first bicycle tour to South Thailand for 16 days the same year.
“The following year, I went on another 16-day cycling trip round Peninsula Malaysia,” he said.
In 2005, David said he cycled a distance of 2,200km covering several Asean countries in 45 days, while in 2006, he cycled 2,300km in South India for 36 days.
Last year, he cycled 1,300km between Jawa and Bali, in Indonesia within 28 days.
“Come June 10, I will embark on a three-month cycling tour to Beijing, China.
“Sadly, I would not be attending the Beijing Olympics 2008 opening on Aug 8 as it is too costly. But, I hope to catch the excitement from outside the stadium,” he said.
The one-way China trip, he said, would cover 4,000km, starting from Bangkok, Thailand, via northern Laos to Beijing.
David said he would also cycle for about 400km from his house in Nibong Tebal to Padang Besar, where he would take a train to Bangkok.
He would take a flight back home from Beijing on his return trip.
David, a former Kedah state badminton player (between 1973 and 1977), said he usually cycled an average of 120km a day, noting that he could cover 100km within eight hours.
“I always bring my medicines, four spare tyre tubes, a map, raincoat jacket, sleeping bag, toiletries, camera and a few pairs of clothes on my trips.
“So far, I have not fallen seriously ill during my trips, except once, when I had mild diarrhoea after eating some spicy noodles in Thailand,” he said, adding that he usually limited his drink to mineral water.

Why and How I start Cycling
So far I have done a few cycling journeys. It started about 5 years ago when I met some cyclists in Parit Buntar, Perak, Malaysia its 45km from Penang. They had great stories about what they experienced. I became enthusiastic and bought a bicycle myself. That was at the end of 2003.
Round Malaysia in 14 days. The first thing I did was to cycle around Malaysia. I soon found out there were only a few Malaysians cycling. For many reasons cycling was never popular except for children. Of course the heat was an important factor. But I do not suffer much from the heat. I cycled around Malaysia in 14 days. I made many new friends. I learned quickly that in the west people are more used to cyclists. But here in Malaysia it's all different. People were friendly, probably curious would be a better word. Those 14 days were a great experience. In Parit Buntar many people started to know my new found love for cycling. Whenever a cyclist was on the way to Parit Buntar, they called me and I would pick them up to show them around my hometown and listen to their stories and tell them a few stories myself.
South Thailand
From the first journey to the next was a small step. South Thailand became the next destination. I went to many different places in South Thailand including Phuket, Krabi, Ko Samui but also to lesser known places such as Songkhla. Making friends in Thailand I went all over and had a great time. But being back home I felt there was more to explore. I started to plan a longer journey which eventually ended up with a plan to ride in Thailand and visit the countries that border Thailand.
Asean Countries
The "40 Days Great Bike Ride" The plan was simple, ride around the border of Thailand on the "other" side of the border. It was the idea to cycle to Siem Riep (Angkor in Cambodia) from Bangkok, then back to Thailand, into Laos. Next would be Vietnam and through China to Myanmar and then back into Thailand. It went actually a bit different. Very soon after I started doing some research it was clear I couldn't do that much. China, according to some cyclists I met, was definitely too much for the time I had available. Another problem was an overland border to Myanmar. There's none you can cross. Not even Malaysians are allowed. (We do not need visa for these countries). Due to a lack of time I couldn't do as much cycling as I wanted. So I went by train to Bangkok and started cycling to Cambodia. Through quite rough road I went back to Thailand, cycled further to Mukhdahan and crossed into Laos to Savanaketh. Now I cycled to the Vietnamese border but due to some things I had to take the bus to Hanoi. From here I cycled to the Vietnamese-Lao border crossing close to Dien Bien Phu but I couldn't cross. I went back to Hanoi, took a bus back to Laos and went straight to North Thailand to get a little bit of a Burmese experience. After visiting the Golden Triangle, I had to go back South. Hardly any time left but I went to Southern Thailand to the island of Ko Tao for a rest.
Cycling in South India
On the 4th of December 2006 I will finally visit the country of my ancestors. Preparations are in full swing now. The flight ticket is arranged, and so is the visa. The plans is to stay 45 days in South India, cycling from Madras to Nagarcoil south and make to a loop to Kerala before visiting some of my relatives living near Madras. I will keep you informed.
On the 16th December 2007 I finally cycle to Java, Indonesia, I start in Jakarta to Bali for 28 days. Please cek my blog -

On the 10th June 2008 at 8.00am, I start packing my gears and cycle to Kuala Ketil to meet my brother and some friends. I will stay a night in his house and leave the next day to Sungai Petani, Gurun. Gurun is where I start working in my young days as a School Lab.Attendant. I have many friends here, hope to meet some of them. I may put up a night in Gunong Jerai near to Guar Cempedak. My next stop will be in Alor Star, I too have many friends here. Most of them are badminton players. I was onces a Kedah State Singles Champion 1974-1976. I was working in Kojel Sultan Hamid and Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Alor Star before I am transfer to Bagan Serai, Perak. Alor Star, Kangar and Padang Besar. A night in Sadao Thailand and I am taking a train to Bangkok. Why I am taking a train is because my earlier trip in South Thailand I have done Sadao to Bangkok. My journey will start again from Bangkok, Lop Buri, Sing Buri, Nakonsawan, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, Phrae, Phayao, Chiang Rai, Mae Chan, Chiang Saen. Expecting about 1000km from Bangkok to the Laos Border.
Now in north Laos I have to work on map when I get there.
